Community-based Environmental Education Initiative

National Wildlife Refuge System’s The Nature of Learning community-based environmental education initiative seeks to: use National Wildlife Refuges as outdoor classrooms to promote a greater understanding of local conservation issues; encourage an interdisciplinary approach to learning that seeks to enhance student academic achievement; utilize field experiences and student-led stewardship projects to connect classroom lessons to real world issues; and involve a partnership among local schools, community groups, natural resource professionals and local businesses.
Maximum Award: $5,000.
Eligibility: schools or non-profit organizations, including "Friends" groups, Cooperative and Interpretive Associations, and Audubon Chapters.

BP A+ for Energy Program

BP’s A+ for Energy program gives grants for implementing creative and innovative educational programs to teach students about energy use, alternative and sustainable energy types and sources, and energy conservation.

EPA Environmental Education Grants Program

This effort supports environmental education projects that promote environmental stewardship and help develop aware and responsible students, teachers, and citizens. This grant program provides financial support for projects which design, demonstrate, or disseminate environmental education practices, methods, or techniques as described in this notice.
Maximum Award: $79,000
Eligibility: Any local education agency, college or university, state education or environmental agency, not-for-profit organization as described in Section 501(C)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, or noncommercial educational broadcasting entity may submit a proposal. A teacher’s school district, an educator’s nonprofit organization, or a faculty member’s college or university may apply, but an individual teacher or faculty member may not apply.

SeaWorld/Busch Gardens/Fujifilm Environmental Excellence Awards recognize the outstanding efforts of students and teachers across the country who are working at the grassroots level to protect and preserve the environment.

REAL 4-H! Community Grants

The 4-H, in cooperation with the Coca-Cola, has announced its REAL 4-H! Community Grants. These mini-grants will engage youth in hands-on, science-based, experiential learning that will develop and enhance the young people’s ability to identify and understand environmental issues in their communities while enabling them to provide leadership toward solving the issues. Grants will be awarded to county-based 4-H Programs in one of three categories selected by the applicant:

  • water (water quality, water conservation, and/or watershed protection)
  • recycling
  • community beautification (including litter abatement)

Grantees must reach a minimum of 250-500 youth and 15-35 volunteers for each REAL 4-H! grant. Only 23 grants of $7,500 each will be awarded.

American Honda Foundation

The American Honda Foundation supports projects with a focus on math, science, the environment, and technology. The Foundation also supports youth job training programs. Grants typically range from about $10,000 to $75,000. For grant guidelines, schools should send a self-addressed stamped envelope to:

Environmental Literacy Grants for Formal K-12 Education

The NOAA Office of Education (OED) is requesting applications for environmental literacy projects in support of K-12 education. Funded projects will last between one and five years in duration and will propose ways to expand the amount of Earth System Science taught in the classroom to improve student learning of that subject. All projects shall employ the relevant strategies articulated in the NOAA Education Plan. All projects should be implemented at a State or multi-State level and have evaluations that fully assess the strengths and weaknesses of the proposed project. This funding opportunity meets NOAA’s Mission Goal to understand climate variability and change to enhance society’s ability to plan and respond.
